Toning
If you want to build muscle you should concentrate on weightlifting and machine work. For toning, focus on yoga, Pilates, and barre work.
The term toning means making the muscle lean by burning fat and conditioning the muscle for better performance.
How It Works
You are not able to actually build muscle mass unless you consume more calories than you burn. However, you can tone a muscle to make it leaner. To achieve this weight train for four days per week, working each muscle group twice during that week. Give the muscles two days’ rest between workouts.
Allowing the body to recover is a major component to responsible exercise. If you continue to work out but don’t allow the muscles to rest, you run the risk of breaking down the muscle tissue and actually doing harm.
